🌿 Key Initiatives in Kenya
1. African Conservancies Fund – Maasai Mara
In collaboration with the Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservancies Association, CI launched the African Conservancies Fund to support communities affected by the decline in tourism revenue. Between December 2020 and December 2022, the fund provided over US$2 million in affordable loans to four conservancies managing 70,000 hectares. This initiative ensured continued income for approximately 3,000 people and maintained wildlife protection efforts.
2. Chyulu Hills Carbon Project
CI is involved in the Chyulu Hills Carbon Project, which generates carbon credits through forest conservation. Funds from this project have been used to address “period poverty” by providing sanitary products and education to young girls, thereby promoting school attendance and breaking menstruation-related stigmas.
3. GEF-8 Kenya Wildlife Conservation Project
CI is implementing the US$10.6 million GEF-8 Kenya GWP Child Project in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife. The project aims to manage human-wildlife conflict through policy coherence, community-led approaches, and technological support in selected landscapes. It also focuses on zoonotic disease surveillance to reduce risks to humans and livestock.
4. Irrecoverable Carbon Mapping
CI has identified areas in Kenya with significant stores of irrecoverable carbon, such as Mount Elgon, Mount Kenya, Loita Hills, and Chyulu Hills. Protecting these areas is crucial for climate change mitigation, as they contain carbon stocks that, if lost, cannot be recovered within human-relevant timescales.
🤝 Community Engagement
CI emphasizes community involvement in conservation efforts. For instance, in the Chyulu Hills, CI supports initiatives that link forest conservation to community benefits like education and health services. By integrating local knowledge and needs, CI promotes sustainable practices that benefit both people and nature.
