About Company

The Collaborative Labeling and Appliance Standards Program (CLASP) is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the energy and environmental performance of appliances and equipment. In Kenya, CLASP has been actively involved in promoting energy efficiency and sustainable cooling solutions through various initiatives and partnerships.

Key Initiatives in Kenya:

  1. Energy Efficiency Policies and Standards:
Since 2017, CLASP has collaborated with Kenyan policymakers to develop and promote energy efficiency policies for high-energy-consuming appliances, such as air conditioners and refrigerators. This collaboration supports Kenya’s Vision 2030 and its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030.

  2. National Cooling Action Plan (NCAP):
In June 2023, Kenya launched its first National Cooling Action Plan, developed with support from CLASP. The five-year plan aims to promote sustainable cooling solutions, enhance the performance and efficiency of cooling appliances, transition to environmentally friendly refrigerants, and improve access to agricultural cold chains. The NCAP aligns with Kenya’s climate commitments and addresses the growing demand for cooling amidst rising temperatures.

  3. Consumer Awareness Campaigns:
CLASP has worked with Kenya’s Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) to design and implement consumer awareness campaigns on energy labeling for appliances. In 2019, Kenya introduced its first energy label for refrigerators. CLASP’s campaigns aim to educate consumers on the benefits of energy-efficient appliances and encourage informed purchasing decisions.

  4. Productive Use Appliance Financing Facility:
In partnership with Nithio, CLASP launched the Productive Use Appliance Financing Facility to support the uptake of productive use appliances in Africa, including Kenya. The facility offers support such as capacity-building grants, product testing, procurement subsidies, and concessional debt to companies operating in the region. This initiative aims to improve affordability and access to energy-efficient appliances, particularly in under-electrified settings.
