Bioversity International

Bioversity International is a global non-profit research-for-development organization established in 1974. In 2019, it merged with the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) to form the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT. This Alliance is a member of CGIAR, a global research partnership dedicated to a food-secure future.

Mission and Focus Areas

The Alliance’s mission is to deliver research-based solutions that harness agricultural biodiversity to sustainably transform food systems and improve people’s lives. Their work focuses on several key areas:

• Agrobiodiversity: Conserving and utilizing agricultural and tree biodiversity to enhance nutrition, productivity, and resilience.

• Climate Action: Developing strategies to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change on agriculture.

• Food Environment and Consumer Behavior: Studying food systems to promote healthy diets and sustainable consumption patterns.

• Digital Inclusion: Leveraging digital technologies to support smallholder farmers and improve agricultural practices.

• Crops for Nutrition and Health: Improving crop varieties to enhance nutritional value and health benefits.

The Alliance operates globally, with its headquarters in Rome, Italy, and regional offices across Africa, Asia, and the Americas. They maintain significant research facilities, including genebanks in Belgium and Colombia, to support their conservation and research efforts.
