African Development Bank

The African Development Bank (AfDB) is a multilateral development finance institution established in 1963 to foster economic development and social progress across Africa. Headquartered in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, the AfDB is part of the African Development Bank Group, which also includes the African Development Fund (ADF) and the Nigeria Trust Fund (NTF).

Mission and Structure

The AfDB’s mission is to promote sustainable economic growth and reduce poverty in Africa by mobilizing and allocating resources for investment in regional member countries (RMCs). It comprises 81 member countries, including 54 African nations and 27 non-African countries. The Bank’s governance includes a Board of Governors and a Board of Executive Directors, with voting power distributed based on member contributions.

As of December 31, 2022, the AfDB’s authorized capital stood at UA 180.64 billion, with subscribed capital of UA 148.77 billion and paid-up capital of UA 9.97 billion.

The AfDB focuses on several strategic priorities, known as the “High 5s”:

• Integrate Africa

• Improve the quality of life for the people of Africa

These priorities guide the Bank’s investments in infrastructure, agriculture, energy, education, and health sectors.
